Bourganeuf is the principal town for the local area and as such has all the amenities you could require whilst on holiday. It has a weekly market on Wednesday mornings with local produce and rare delicacies. It also hosts throughout the year fetes and shows of one sort and another. The local tourist office has all the details and more.

The town is dominated by the chateau and the Zizim Towers, half of which is now the town hall while the other half is open to the public. The main commercial area is set around a square with a fountain over looked by the church. Where you can sit outside a bar or café and watch the townsfolk go about their business.

The town has many restaurants from pizza parlours to a la carte menu’s there is something for everyone. There is the museum of electricity which shows that Bourganeuf was one of the first French towns to have its own electricity supply. There is even a small golf course set on the side of the hill and overlooking the town. Shops in the town are all traditional with patesserie’s and boulangeries selling their freshly made pastries and bread. Or if you want to stock up on wine etc there is a large supermarche just on the outskirts.

Bourganeuf is on the northern reach of the Millevache plateau a national park of special interest. Most famous for Lac Vassiverre the largest man made lake in France. Where you can walk, ride, canoe, sail or relax on one of the beaches and take a dip. The lake is set amongst the fantastic rolling scenery of this area and is very beautiful at any time of the year. There are several places to stop off and get a drink or something to eat.

Gueret the department’s capital is only 20 to 25 minutes drive from Bourganeuf and is the main administrative centre for the area. It has many of the larger shops as well as its own local town shopping area. It also boasts the largest outdoor maze in France which is not far from the wolf forest! The market is on a Thursday.

Limoge is the capital of the region and is a very famous city in its own right. It has many attractions and sights to see like the old butchers quarter or the cathedral as well as its world famous porcelain. It is only a 40 minute drive from Bourganeuf or there is a local bus which can be caught in one of the towns squares. Limoge is also where the nearest international airport is, which is situated on the north west side of the city.

Aubusson is a largest town directly east of Bouganeuf about 20 minutes by car. It used to be the main producer of tapestries for the whole of France and beyond. While this is no longer popular they still make tapestries there and there is also a museum showing the history.
